Every true enthusiast is anticipating the upcoming BMW F80 M3 and BMW F82 M4, I know I am.
The screaming 4L naturally aspirated V8 from the E90 and E92 M3 will be thrown out to make room for a new twin turbo and supercharged 6 cylinder. While a twin-turbo charged V6 is rumored, an inline 6 TT is more likely.
I'm hopping the V6 roomer is not true, but as of today, it still seems possible.

Hardcore or even passive BMW enthusiasts are deeply disturbed by the rumors about the move from the legendary BMW inline 6 into a more common, and less unique, V6 engine. Regardless of how much technology and benefits a V6 may have over an inline 6 cylinder.

If the new M3 goes back to having an inline 6, expect the stock exhaust manifold to be optimized for high exhaust flow and optimum back pressure. The reason for that is BMW makes good use of the room that a longitudaly mounted inline engine provides once powering the rear wheels. The move into a V6, while easier to mount behind the front axle for better 50/50 weight distribution, it takes up too much room horizontally. That will most likely force BMW engineers to settle for a less high-flow optimized stock exhaust manifold design to make room for accessing parts in engine bay as compared with the inline engines.

That should prompt exhaust tuning houses to start producing high flow and long tube headers for the BMW M3 V6, with additional design around the turbo outlet area. Another way to look at this is BMW might be able to pull off amazing header/manifold design which would not require enthusiasts to purchase headers... I'll have to admit, it still feels awkward stating BMW M3 and V6 in one sentence, let alone going into a deep discussion about the subject.

We also anticipate aftermarket performance turbo back exhaust systems that will most likely be sold as full systems, or as separate components. The next few weeks will reveal more details for us. I'm hoping for an inline 6, regardless of how BMW does it. Let's wait and see.
